ATLANTA · THE POUR ACADEMY
A beginner’s guide to bartending fundamentals
A reliable bartender uses a repeatable system: set up correctly, measure accurately, choose the right technique and stay organized. Here is a practical starting point for your first hands-on class.
Start with the essential tools
- JIGGER
- Measure ingredients consistently instead of guessing.
- SHAKER
- Chill and combine cocktail ingredients.
- STRAINER
- Control ice and solids as you transfer a drink.
- BAR SPOON
- Stir spirit-forward drinks with control.
- ICE SCOOP
- Handle ice hygienically; never use glassware as a scoop.
Practice accuracy before speed
Use training liquid and a measuring tool. Repeat ten 1.5-ounce pours, measuring each result and recording the difference. Consistency matters more than rushing through the drill. Follow the recipe and venue standard for each drink.
Understand build, shake and stir
Build: add ingredients directly to the serving glass for simple mixed drinks and highballs. Shake: combine and chill drinks with citrus, juice or syrup in sealed shaker tins. Stir: gently chill and dilute spirit-forward drinks over ice.
Keep your workstation under control
Put each tool back in the same place. Reset the station after each ticket, keep rims and glassware clean, and prepare fresh garnishes. A tidy station helps you notice mistakes before a drink reaches the guest.
Communicate before you pour
Greet the guest, clarify their order and spirit preference, repeat the ticket, then build and present the drink. If ID, service eligibility or a payment policy is unclear, involve the venue manager.
Put the fundamentals into practice
The One-Day Bartending Intensive in Atlanta pairs these skills with rotating stations and a simulated rush. Students must be 18 or older with valid government-issued photo ID.
